Gold Chain Price Per Gram — How We Price Our Chains

As of 2026-07-03: Our 14K solid gold Cuban link chains are priced at $121–$129 per gram depending on weight tier. 10K Cubans run $83–$92/g. 14K chains in other styles (rope, Franco, curb, Figaro) range from $106–$142/g. Pre-owned gold chains start at $107/g. Every chain on our site lists its exact gram weight — divide the price by the weight and you’ll get the per-gram rate.

At Ott Family Jewelry, we price every gold chain by its actual gram weight at a transparent per-gram rate. That means you always know exactly what you’re paying for — no inflated retail markups, no mystery pricing. This guide explains how our pricing works, what affects the per-gram rate, and how to compare any jeweler’s prices using the same method.

Current Per-Gram Rates by Collection

How is a gold chain’s price calculated?

The price of a solid gold chain comes down to three factors: the karat purity of the gold, the gram weight of the chain, and the per-gram rate the jeweler charges for that style and width.

The formula is simple:

Chain Price = Gram Weight × Per-Gram Rate

Every chain listing at Ott Family Jewelry shows the exact length, width in millimeters, and weight in grams. We publish these details because we believe you should be able to verify exactly what you’re paying per gram — and compare it to any other jeweler using the same math.

Melt value (the raw gold content value) sets the floor. The per-gram rate above melt covers the cost of manufacturing the chain — drawing wire, cutting links, soldering, polishing, and quality control. More intricate chain styles (like Cubans or Franco chains) cost more per gram to manufacture than simpler styles (like curb or rope), which is why per-gram rates vary by style.

Why do heavier chains cost less per gram?

You’ll notice that heavier chains tend to carry a lower per-gram rate than lighter ones. A 30-gram 14K Cuban might run $122/g while a 5-gram Cuban of the same style runs $128/g. This isn’t a volume discount — it’s manufacturing economics.

Every chain has fixed costs that don’t scale with weight: the clasp, quality inspection, packaging, and a baseline amount of labor. On a 30-gram chain, those fixed costs spread across more grams. On a 4-gram chain, the same fixed costs concentrate into fewer grams, pushing the per-gram rate higher.

This is true across the industry, not just at OFJ. If a jeweler charges the same per-gram rate regardless of weight, lighter pieces are typically being subsidized by heavier ones.

10K vs 14K vs 18K: what changes in price per gram?

Karat measures purity — the percentage of pure gold in the alloy:

  • 10K = 41.7% pure gold (417 fineness)
  • 14K = 58.3% pure gold (585 fineness)
  • 18K = 75.0% pure gold (750 fineness)

Higher karat means more pure gold per gram, which means a higher per-gram cost. A 14K chain contains roughly 40% more pure gold per gram than a 10K chain, and the per-gram pricing reflects that difference.

At current rates, 14K Cuban links run roughly 45–50% more per gram than 10K. The premium isn’t just gold content — 14K also has a richer color and higher resale value. 18K carries a further premium and is typically available in our custom handmade collection.

What is melt value, and how much over melt is fair?

Melt value is what the raw gold in a chain would be worth if you melted it down and sold it as bullion. It’s calculated as:

Melt Value = (Gold Spot Price ÷ 31.1035) × Karat Purity × Gram Weight

For example, if gold is $3,000/oz and you have a 20-gram 14K chain: ($3,000 ÷ 31.1035) × 0.583 × 20 = $1,124 melt value.

No finished chain sells at melt value — the manufacturer and jeweler need to cover the cost of making it. The premium over melt depends on the style, craftsmanship, and the jeweler’s margin. Mass-produced machine-made chains typically sell at a lower premium over melt than handmade pieces, because handmade work involves significantly more labor per gram.

A fair way to evaluate any jeweler’s pricing: calculate the melt value of the chain, then see how the asking price compares. If the chain specs (weight, karat) aren’t listed, that itself is a red flag.

How to check what ANY jeweler is charging per gram

This is the most important thing on this page. You can audit any gold chain listing — ours or anyone else’s — with one calculation:

Per-Gram Rate = Listed Price ÷ Gram Weight

If a jeweler lists a 14K Cuban at $3,800 and says it weighs 30 grams, the per-gram rate is $126.67. You can compare that directly to any other jeweler’s 14K Cuban per-gram rate.

The catch: many retailers don’t publish gram weights. If a chain listing doesn’t tell you the weight, you can’t calculate the per-gram rate — and that’s often intentional. At Ott Family Jewelry, every single chain listing includes the verified gram weight because we want you to do this math. We’re confident in where our rates land.

Custom Handmade Cuban Link — Estimated Weight Chart

Our custom handmade Cuban link chains are made to order in 10K, 14K, and 18K gold, with a typical turnaround of 1–2 weeks (the industry standard for handmade is 15–20 weeks). Ordering works on a 50% deposit that locks your per-gram rate; the final balance is based on the finished chain’s actual weight.

The chart below shows estimated weights by width and length so you can budget before ordering. These are estimates — actual weights may vary, and you’ll be invoiced based on the real weight of your finished piece.
